Answer · Home services

Why do home services clicks cost more than average?

Because the click is bought at the moment of the emergency, and the competition is bidding on the same minute.

Because the searches are urgent. Home and home improvement averages $8.33 a click against $5.42 across all industries — a premium paid for immediate intent, which is also the intent that expires fastest if nobody picks up.

The premium is not arbitrary and it is not a platform markup. It reflects what the click is: a person with standing water, no heat, or a door that will not lock, searching on a phone with an immediate willingness to transact. Advertisers bid up that moment because it converts at rates ordinary consideration traffic never reaches — and because the alternative, being absent from it, means the job goes to whoever was there.

What makes the premium expensive rather than merely high is that the value decays inside the same session. A researched purchase tolerates a callback tomorrow. An emergency does not: the searcher calls the next result while the first is still ringing, and by the time a voicemail is returned the technician from another company is already in the driveway. The click was bought at emergency prices and consumed at leisure-purchase speed, and the difference is the whole leak.

The second structural cost is the one that never appears in an ad account. A missed call in this industry does not become a slower sale — it becomes somebody else's completed job, invoiced the same day. The paid channel reports it as a click that did not convert, which is technically true and completely uninformative, because the conversion happened at a competitor within the hour.

The practical response is unglamorous and does not involve the ad platform at all. Every inbound path is timed from the outside — the tracked number, the form, the chat, the marketplace enquiry — and the after-hours path is treated as a first-class channel rather than as an overflow. Businesses that do this usually discover the expensive discovery first: one of those paths rings somewhere nobody has listened to in months.

In home services you are not paying for a click. You are paying for a specific minute in somebody's day, and the value of that minute falls to zero once someone else answers.

Would bidding lower fix the cost?

It lowers the invoice and usually raises the cost per booked job, because the impressions given up are the urgent ones at the top of the page. The cheaper positions attract more comparison shopping and more quote-collecting, which is the traffic least likely to convert on the first call.

We get most of our work from a marketplace, not from ads. Does this apply?

The pricing mechanism is different but the decay is identical, and often faster — shared marketplace leads are sent to several contractors at once, so response order decides the job before price or reputation is discussed. The measurement worth having is the same one: how long each path waits before a human replies.

Reading about a benchmark is not the same as knowing your own number. The audit produces yours, measured rather than estimated.
