Answer

Does publishing your prices actually matter?

It decides whether a majority of buyers ever contact you, and you never see the ones who don't.

Yes, decisively. More than 60% of B2B buyers eliminate vendors that publish no pricing before making any contact, and about two-thirds now prefer a purchase path with no sales rep in it at all.

The argument for hiding a price is always that it starts a conversation. The measured behaviour is the opposite: the buyer closes the tab and shortlists someone who answered the question. Because that rejection happens before any contact, it never arrives as an objection you can handle. It arrives as an absence of enquiries, which is indistinguishable from not being found at all.

The preference for a rep-free path is the part most sellers underestimate. It is not a preference for less service — it is a preference for doing the evaluation without being managed through it. A published price is what makes that possible, and a business that withholds one is asking to be involved in a stage of the decision the buyer wanted to run alone.

None of this requires publishing a single flat number for work that genuinely varies. A range with the condition that moves it, or a worked example with the assumptions shown, does the job. What fails is the absence of any figure, because the buyer reads that as either expensive or improvised, and both readings end the same way.

A hidden price does not create a conversation. It removes you from consideration before anyone has a chance to have one.

What if my work genuinely varies by client?

Publish the range and the thing that decides where inside it a project lands. The buyer is not looking for a quote at this stage — they are checking whether you are in their bracket at all.

Won't competitors see my pricing?

They will, and they mostly already can. The competitor who wanted your rate card can obtain it by asking for a quote. The buyer who wanted it and could not find it simply leaves.
